The Amazing Amazon…
The best way to travel across the 2.1 million miles of tropical Amazon terrain is on a boat cruise. There are a multitude of cruises you can choose from, visiting the eight different countries the Amazon covers: Brazil, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, and Suriname, as well as French Guiana. The most popular areas to visit are the Peruvian, Venezuelan, Brazilian and Bolivian regions because they hold the highest percentage of this famous jungle. The Amazon in Ecuador is also a popular choice due to the incredible wildlife and strong conservation efforts. To make your Amazon adventure even more unforgettable, we’ve curated a list of a few amazon travel tips.
What should I do to prepare for a holiday in the Amazon?
The most important thing to do before you jet off into the amazon is to make sure the vaccinations you will need to travel to this area are up to date. It is recommended that you get Tetanus, Diphtheria pertussis, Hepatitis A, Typhoid vaccines before you travel. In addition, you may need a Hepatitis B, Meningococcal and/or Meningitis vaccine depending on which country you visit. Wherever you’re travelling in South America, it is mandatory that you have a Yellow Fever vaccination.
Booking your cruise and/or accommodation in advance is highly recommended, and don’t forget travel insurance.
What should I wear while walking in the Amazon?
The rainforest climate of the Amazon means the air is humid and temperatures are usually fairly warm. However, it can get pretty cold if there’s no direct sunlight on you. Also, don’t forget it can rain, very heavily (over 3,000 millimetres per year) so be sure to pack the following items:
- Long sleeve shirt
- Lightweight waterproof jacket
- Long pants
- Sturdy hiking boots (or shoes with a strong grip)
- A hat
What should I bring with me to the Amazon?
- Insect repellent – seriously, make sure you have extra strength insect repellent with high levels of DEET to keep those pesky mosquitos away
- Camera – you may want to bring a waterproof case as well
- Hand sanitiser
What kinds of wildlife will I see?
From giant frogs and snakes, to beautiful birds and mammals, the amazon hosts no shortage of incredible wildlife. However don’t expect to see jaguars and anacondas roaming the forest floor in plain sight. Any sound of movement can result in the animals hiding amongst the thick vegetation. While you may not see lots of animals while walking on the forest floor, you will hopefully see a fair few along the banks of the river while on your cruise.
Your amazon adventure will be an unparalleled experience that will bring you into contact with some of the most interesting species of trees, plants, exotic animals as well as the friendly and hospitable people that live along the river. Enjoy!
